Centennial doesn't draw much water, but sharpies (even nonpareil ones like Centennial) also have very little deadrise. The combination of shallow draft and meager deadrise causes her to stiffen up nicely when heeled.

Ted Brewer specified, IIRC, 1,250 pounds in the shallow keel he added to the classic form, and the top-hamper was as reduced as much as practical, so there is enough static stability to keep things quiet enough in harbor.

I have no big plans to sail Centennial across an ocean, but people do it in MeadowLarks (a Herreshoff predecessor to Centennial, also frequently built by Nick Vaitses) surprisingly often.

Hello, Gaff vangs, used them alot on my parents gaff ketch, don't go from the mizzen mast head straight onto the peak of the main (old man had to climb the mizzen and cut it free once, just to get the main down, with this system), ideally start at the cockpit, run forward to base of mast, up mast to block on throat of main, then out to plastic hose lashed to peak, then to mizzen masthead, then down to deck, though plastic hose fairleads. This rig is self tending when raising or lowering gaff, and can be released at either end in case of tangles

Cheers

Ben

I really like the Centenial design, interested to hear about stability with the shallow hull, but she looks beautifull under sail.

Cheers

It's tremendously silly AND I loved it. It's visually stunning.
But then I've given up angst.
(I never did see Titanic, but The Terminator was great.)
